Connecting Haystack to Slack via MCP

Power your Slack workflows with real-time, context-aware answers pulled straight from Haystack using Model Context Protocol (MCP).

Slack is where daily conversation happens, while Haystack is where verified company knowledge lives. Connecting Haystack to Slack bridges the gap between daily chat and institutional knowledge.

Instead of leaving Slack to find policies, employee handbooks, announcement posts, or project updates, teams can query Haystack right inside their channels and direct messages. This seamless integration speeds up response times for HR, IT, and Internal Comms inquiries, keeps answers accurate, and reduces repetitive questions across shared channels.

What is an MCP?

Think of a Model Context Protocol (MCP) as a secure digital bridge between your AI tools and your workplace software. Just as a physical adapter connects a laptop to a projector, an MCP allows conversational interfaces like Slack AI assistants to safely plug into your Haystack intranet to search and summarize internal information instantly.

Setup Prerequisites & Permissions

  • MCP add-on: Your Haystack workspace is licensed for MCP integrations. If it isn’t, Slack will tell users to contact their admin.
  • Slack plan: Depending on your Slack plan, connecting Slackbot to apps may require an add-on. [Confirm with George]
  • Admin authorization: Must be set up by a Haystack Workspace Admin who is also a Slack App Admin or Workspace Owner.
  • Official app available: Haystack provides an official, verified app in the Slack Marketplace.
  • User permissions: Every question respects the person’s Haystack access. Private documents and restricted spaces stay hidden from anyone who can’t already see them.

Step-by-Step Guide

Already using the Haystack Slack integration? Reconnect to add MCP.

The updated Haystack app needs one new permission for MCP. Your existing Slack features, like auto-posting Haystack news to channels, will keep working as before.

  1. In Haystack, go to Admin Console > Integrations > Slack.
  2. Reinstall the app by turning the Slack integration off, then back on. [Confirm with George that this is the reinstall step]
  3. Follow the Slack prompts and approve the new MCP permission.

Setting up Slack for the first time

  1. In Haystack, go to Admin Console > Integrations > Slack and turn it on.
  2. Sign in to Slack as a Slack App Admin or Workspace Owner, and approve the requested permissions, including MCP.
  3. Test it by asking Slackbot about a Haystack page you know exists.

💡 You’ll see the MCP permission during setup even if your workspace isn’t licensed for MCP. Without the add-on, the Slack app still works for notifications, but Slackbot won’t be able to search Haystack.

Best Practices

  • Ask Slackbot directly: Encourage teams to ask Slackbot first before posting in support channels like #ask-hr or #it-helpdesk.
  • Share links, not screenshots: Every answer links back to the Haystack source, so share the page instead of copying text that might go out of date.
  • Be specific: Name what you’re looking for, like a person, team, event, or page. “Who owns benefits enrollment?” works better than “benefits.”
  • Keep documentation up to date: Slackbot pulls from Haystack in real time, so current pages mean current answers.
