Understanding Content Translation in Haystack
Learn how Haystack supports a multilingual workplace through automatic UI translation and AI-powered content translation.
In today’s global workforce, clear communication shouldn't be limited by language barriers. Haystack provides two powerful ways to ensure every employee feels included and informed, regardless of their native tongue. Whether it’s navigating the platform menus or reading the latest CEO update, our translation tools help bridge the gap.
Prerequisites & Permissions
-
Automatic UI Translation: Available to all users on all plans. No special setup is required.
-
On-Demand Content Translation: This is a paid add-on. If you'd like to use this tooling, please reach out to your Haystack Customer Success Manager (CSM) or support@haystackteam.com for more info.
How Translation Works in Haystack
We approach translation in two distinct layers to provide the best user experience:
1. Automatic App Interface Translation
For all Haystack customers, the "hard-coded" parts of the platform—such as navigation menus, buttons, and settings labels—will automatically match your device settings.
-
How it works: Haystack detects the language settings of your web browser or mobile Operating System (iOS/Android).
-
What is translated: Fixed text like "Home," "Directory," "Settings," and "Search."
-
Note: If you spot a typo or an awkward phrasing in these hard-coded sections, please let us know! We are constantly refining our language packs.
2. On-Demand Content Translation (Add-on)
For organizations with the Translation Add-on, users can translate posts, pages, and events—the actual info your team writes—into one of 15 supported languages. This is powered by Google’s Enterprise AI Translate for high accuracy.
Steps to translate a Post, Page, or Event:
-
Navigate to the piece of content you wish to read.
-
Click the three-dot menu (...) located in the top-right corner of the content block.
-
Select Translate from the dropdown menu.
-
Choose your preferred language from the list.
-
The text will instantly update to your selected language.

FAQs & Troubleshooting
Can I set a default language for all content? Currently, users cannot set a "default" language for user-generated content. Because Haystack prioritizes the original formatting and intent of the author, you will need to trigger the translation manually for each individual post or page you view.
What if the translation seems incorrect?
-
For Menus/Buttons: Since these are managed by Haystack, please email our support team so we can update the core code.
-
For Posts/Pages: These are handled by Google AI. If a translation is unclear, it may be due to complex idioms or formatting in the original post.
Best Practices
-
Keep it Simple: If you know your audience uses the translation tool, try to avoid heavy jargon or complex metaphors in your original posts to ensure the AI translates your intent accurately.
-
Mobile Readiness: Remind your international employees to check their phone’s language settings; Haystack will automatically align its interface to match.
-
Visual Context: Even with translation, images and videos remain universal. Use them to supplement your written updates.
